위슬리 가든 (Wisley Garden)

 

위슬리 가든은 런던 근교 남쪽에 위치한 영국 원예 협회인 RHS(Royal Horticultural Society)의 4대 정원 중 하나.

 

 

 이곳 주차장에는 3천대의 차를 주차할 수 있는데 오전 11시에 이렇게 꽉 차 버렸다!

 

 

 

RHS 멤버인 George Ferguson Wilson에 의해 1878년에 ‘Oakwood Experimental Garden’ 으로 처음 설립 되었다. 1902년 Wilson 사후, Sir Thomas Hanbury 에게 매각, 다음 해인 1903년 사회에 기부되어 현재에 이르기 까지 세계적인 정원으로 발전해왔다.

 

 

 

다양하게 심어진 식물 및 아름다운 장미로 꾸며진 정원, 예술적인 Glasshouse등이 감상 가능하다. Award of Garden Merit로 부터 인정받은 수백여 가지 꽃들을 감상 가능한 Trials Field, 전 세계로부터 수집된 고산식물 등이 전시되어 있다. [네이버 지식백과] kotra 국가정보 - 영국, 2013.9.30

유리온실이 있는 정원에서 작은 언덕(Glasshouse borders)을 따라 걷다보면 다양한 과일나무들이 재배되고 있는 Fruit Field, Fruit Mount(작은 언덕같은 전망대), Fruit Nursery(재배)가 나옵니다. 

 

 

 

 

특히 Fruit Field에는 700여 그루의 다양한 종의 사과나무가 있습니다. 이곳은 정원보다는 과수원에 가까운 곳이지만 봄에는 사과 꽃으로 그리고 가을에는 빨갛게 익어가는 탐스러운 열매로 이곳 정원을 찾는 사람들에게 인기가 많은 곳이기도 합니다. 계절별로 Edible garden에 대한 교육이 있어 이곳에서 배운 실용적인 지식을 직접 실생활에 적용해볼 수 있는 좋은 기회이기도 합니다.

 

 

 

Fruit Field를 지나면 The Honest Sausage at the Orchard Cafe가 나옵니다. 이곳 카페에서는 간단한 음료와 식사를 제공하고 있는데요. 특히 소세지와 베이컨 샌드위치의 맛이 일품입니다. 정원이 워낙 커서 여기 저기 돌아다니다 보면 배도 고프고 다리가 아파오는데 이곳에서 간단히 식사를 하면서 에너지를 충전할 수 있습니다.

이곳에는 정원사 양성학교도 있어 원예 애호가의 성지라고 할 수 있을 정도이며, 36만평의 광할한 부지에 무려 24개의 정원이 조성되어 있습니다. Kew Garden과 함께 유명한 가든이므로 시간이 나면 한가로이 둘러 보시기를 권합니다.
